The book of art : a pictorial encyclopedia of painting, drawing, and sculpture.

Summary:

These books use a standard template to address the history of art: first, a historical introduction sets out the main lines of development within the period covered, with special reference to major artists and the major works of art. Second are illustrated biographies which outline the life and work of every major and important minor artist. These are followed by the colored plates, drawings, and sculpture sections, with the influences and developments section drawing together the main ideas, characteristics of schools and styles, and the internal and external influences that had an impact on the arts during the period concerned. Volumes nine and ten are more general in their scope and treatment.
