The Indian in American history

Summary: The treatment of American Indians is discussed historically with reference to the 4 principal methods used to create or perpetuate false impressions: obliteration, defamation, disembodiment, and disparagement. Indian contributions to American civilization are cited in contrast with historical references to Indians in textbooks. The author suggests specific reading materials for various age levels which reflect accurately the cultural contributions of the Indian. A bibliography on the American Indian influence on American civilization is appended. (Jh).
