Biographical or Historical Data:
Julia Butler Hansen was born in Cathlamet, Washington in 1907. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1930. Singing Paddles was a prize winner in the Juila Ellsworth Ford contest, a Juvenile book award, in 1935. Julia was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1939 and for served for 22 years. In 1960 she was elected to an unexpired term in the Congress which she served for 14 years.
