Indian, soldier, and settler : experiences in the struggle for the American West / Robert M. Utley.
Rather than generalizing about Indians, soldiers, and settlers, the author has chosen an actual individual from each group, not a hero or leader, and tells us that person's experience. This is not fiction; these are documented case histories. Using his sources carefully, the author reconstructs the experiences these people of the frontier had, as well as what they knew or thought they knew. For their attitudes were formed both by their experiences, and by what they had heard.
