Dividing the reservation : Alice C. Fletcher's Nez Perce allotment diaries and letters 1889-1892 / Nicole Tonkovich, [editor].

Summary:

In Dividing the Reservation, research is unearthed on ethnologist Alice Cunningham Fletcher, who was one of the first female federal Indian agents and helped write the Dawes General Allotment Act of 1887. The book presents details gleaned from Fletcher's written letters, official reports, diaries, scholarly documents, and magazine articles on federal Indian policies, particularly regarding the division of Nez Perce ("Nimiipuu") land. While her goal was to ensure that the Nez Perce retained the best land, there were several factors that inhibited attainment of that goal. This book helps clarify those factors and documents Fletcher's process and efforts. --Publisher.
