The final issue in a series of Native American instructional materials, this booklet for elementary students discusses contemporary Indian leaders and issues, the survival of traditions, and the effects of Indian stereotyping. Designed to help students understand the problems that have faced Native Americans since the first Europeans settled on Indian homelands, the booklet provides a variety of background information, illustrations, class activities, and discussion questions. Topics include Indian values, value conflicts between Indians and non-Indians, present day Indian life styles, the role of the bia, stereotypes, foods and place names of Indian origin, treaty rights, and fishing rights in particular. Student activities include identifying Indian stereotypes in literature and advertising and role playing the parts of Seminole leader Osceola and Captain Gaines, who was charged with removing the Seminoles from their Florida homelands to Oklahoma. Students are asked to imagine and describe their reactions if their own culture were outlawed by modern invaders. The final section briefly describes the lives and contributions of four contemporary Indian leaders--Maria Tallchief, Bernie Whitebear, Chief Dan George, and Buffy Sainte-Marie.
