This collection of Italian tales presents material that is little known here and does it very attractively. There are a lot of stories, ranging the length of boot in locale from Sicily to the Alps and in theme from religious miracles to legends of local characters. The title story is of two merchants of Venice, one good, the other bad. In the days of the spice trade the good Giovanni delivers an eastern city of its rat plague with a gift of two cats and receives a world of riches; the jealous Cesare, returning to the same spot, is given a pair of kittens as the most valuable thing the sultan can offer. Then there is the joke Domenico di Pace, an actual painter in Siena, played on his master as a youth. These and many others make a varied and entertaining collection.
