Summary:

Native American chef Loretta Barret Oden visits the Sonoran desert of Southwest Arizona, land of the Tohono O'odham people. She learns about the desert's native plants, traditionally used to make the life sustaining foods of the Sonoran desert, including saguaro cactus, prickly pears, mesquite pods, cholla buds, and tapary beans. These foods help control obesity and diabetes as the tribe attempts to regain the their traditional good health. Oden learns to make cholla bud porridge with ground saguaro seeds, wild spinach with cholla buds and chiltepine peppers, ash bread, and tapary beans with ribs. She also participates in a saguaro harvest and traditional basket weaving.
