Why save a language? [videorecording] / producer/director, Sally Thompson ; Regional Learning Project, University of Montana.

Summary:

Representatives from tribes in North and South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon, all of whom have indigenous language programs, discuss how the indigenous languages were broken by residential schools and why the indigenous languages should be saved as the language of religion, culture and cultural identity and as storehouses of environmental knowledge. The languages are large libraries containing knowledge of tribal history. They discuss the positive effects on children of learning the tribal language from an early age. Why save a language? is designed to engage people in thinking about indigenous languages and why their preservation and revitalization matter. In this film we explore: the history of American Indian language use since the boarding school era; the rationale underlying the premise that these languages matter; and some current efforts to revitalize surviving languages.
