A Victorian earl in the Arctic : the travels and collections of the fifth Earl of Lonsdale, 1888-89 / Shepard Krech III ; with a biographical introduction by J.V. Beckett.

Summary:

This three-part book begins with a short biography by J.V. Beckett, who explains that the Fifth Earl of Lonsdale was unprepared by education or inclination for any career and set about spending the family fortune on riotous living when he inherited its title. A widely publicized illicit relationship with a London actress prompted Lonsdale's overseas journey, in hope that his indiscretions would be forgotten if he left England for an extended period. In the second part of the book, Shepard Krech's review of Lonsdale's trip diary and letters makes it clear that an unpromising beginning foreshadowed the Earl's distaste for rigors of primitive travel and "other" cultures as well as his attempts to falsify his travel record. The final part is Krech's interpretation of 200 artifacts donated to the British Museum, the remainder of a collection that Lonsdale kept mostly for himself. Given the nature of Lonsdale, it is not surprising that the author justifies this work, in part, as an examination of ignoble motives and unsystematic collections by Victorian travelers of high station. Fortunately, Krech's interpretation of the collection makes an important contribution to the historic record.
